The African Safari
Close your eyes and imagine the perfect combination of mountains, forests and ide, open spaces, clear skies and sunny weather, an abundance of wildlife roaming the grasslands around you, the African sun setting in the distance and friends, families sharing stories around cracking campfires. This is a typical safari in Africa-something all nature lovers should experience at least once in their lifetime.
WHAT YOU SHOULD CONSIDER:
-
Who you travel with. Are they in the best area? Are they ethical and responsible? Are they a genuine ecotourism company that actively engages with conservation and community projects and attempts to lessen their impact?
-
Who you book with. Are they Africa specialists? How long have been in business? Have they travelled to the places they are recommending? Do they visit Africa frequently and do they recommend responsible travelling?
-
What countries and regions are you visiting? Africa is vast and diverse. Prioritising what you see and do on your first visit is important, which is why time spent consulting your Buja Tours & Safaris specialist is so helpful, they are best positioned to explain the continent and focus on your plans.
-
How you combine those regions. Combing areas and regions is the best way to discover the diverse wildlife species that thrive in different habitats. In Botswana for an example, it is worth combining the dyer areas of the Kalahari, the permanent swamps and waterways of the Okavango Delta and the mixed plains and woodlands of the Linyanti.
-
When should you visit. Seasonality is important in your consideration, as different parts of the continent, and even the rigions within those parts, are at their best at different times of the year. Your Buja Tours & Safaris specialist is best positioned to advice you on this. For example, if you would like to experience Africa’s season of birth and abundance, or you’re a birder, then summer is generally best. For those seeking dryer landscape and teeming herds around limited water resources, winter is the season for you.
-
What kind of accommodation you will stay. We believe canvas, timber and hatch are the most sustainable building materials and also offer the most intimate encounters with Africa. Tents are no longer just rustic accommodation, but can be sumptuous, luxurious rooms that offer every conceivable comfort. Choosing the level of luxury is an important element.
WHAT WILL YOU DO ON SAFARI
-
Due to the diverse areas in which Buja Tours & Safaris operates, the experiences offered vary enormously from camp to camp/ lodge to lodge. A game drive in the Kalahari is very different to a drive through the Busanga Plains. Wildlife can also be enjoyed on foot, by mokoro, by boat, by air or evening from the comfort of your lodge/ camp.
-
Experiences don’t just stop here as Buja Tours & Safaris introduces you to every aspect of Africa: from relaxing in camp/ lodge and dining under stars in the bush to observing nature unfold in the African wild and storytelling.
-
On game drive. A game drive is an essential ingredient of any safari, being one of the ways to view wildlife. Not only are able to cover considerable distances and differing habitats of an area in a short space of time, but 4 x 4 vehicles are a good vantage point from which to watch wildlife safety. Game drives takes place in the morning seeing the bush spring to life as the day dawns, and in the afternoon/ evening where there is a chance of seeing nocturnal predators as they wake from their day’s rest.
-
On the water. One of the romantic ways of enjoying the Wilderness is on the water. It is the quintessential element of any trip to the Okavango where guests float silently along the blue channels of the Delta in traditional mekoro (dugout canoes). Motorboats are also used for transfers as well as for seasonal catch-and release fishing.
-
In Camp/ Lodge. ‘Home away from home’ are not only places where you will sleep but are idyllic, well-appointed retreats where you can relax between activities, indeed, nursing a cup of coffee around the fire or sipping a gin and tonic while looking out over a quintessential African view is as much part of the experience as a game drive. Each lodge/camp has its own individual style and is often design using cultural elements of the area. A lounge and bar area and deck all look out onto a feature of interest or beauty. Most camps/ lodge has swimming pools to float in the midday sum even have star-beds, outdoor showers and massage treatments for your enjoyments.
-
On Foot. Walking on safari has always been regarded as one of the finest ways to get to know the African wilderness. Aside from the excitement if viewing wildlife, walking through the untamed, remote bush allows you to get your feet on the ground and away from vehicles, to really feel, smell and touch Africa. Walking Safaris range from a short morning or afternoon walk (guide-and season-dependent).
-
In the Air. Travelling by air is the best way of showing the scenic expanse and remoteness of the area in which we operate. Transferring from camp to camp or lodge to lodge is a seamless way of ensuring a smooth journey as well as appreciating the magnificent and scale of the continent. Another way of appreciating the magnificent landscapes is by hot air balloon, some of the camps/ lodges offers hot air ballooning for a quitter and more peaceful perspective of the wilderness and ending with a well-deserved champagne breakfast.
-
At meals: Dining is an essential part of your safari and therefore we make every effort to ensure a convivial atmosphere wherever we are, While good wholesome food is served, you can expect a cultural twist to your meals. Meals can take place in camp/ lodge, in the bush, under the stars or in a traditional boma. For romantic, you can request for private dining.
